7: An Expert on My Field

Hello everybody!

Paulo Freire

He was born on 1921 in Recife, Brazil. In 1947, he was director of department of Education and Culture of Social Service of the Industry. He studied linguistics, while in 1959 he obtained his doctorate in Philosophy and History of the education where he addressed the educational topics of Brazil of the time. Thereafter, he established that all education process must start from the reality that is surrounding each person.

As a result of Brazilian military coup of 1964, he had abandon his activity, considered as a revolutionary, and seek refuge in Chile, where he participated in various plans of the democratic government of Eduardo Frei, for example the adult education program of the Chilean Institute for Agrarian Reform (ICIRA). In Chile he wrote his book that has the name ‘Pedagogia do Oprimido’, whose content displeasure the government of Santiago, since he exhibited a long way of the oppressed individuals, to achieve the release, what forced them to think, consider and the right to BE.

Paulo Freire allowed me to change many misconceptions of what pedagogy is, I remember that the first book I read about him was ‘Professora sim, tia não: cartas a quem ousa ensinar’ I was struck by your appreciation of the educational role, transforming reality and giving a pass to the liberation of people through constructive criticism, thus being an agent of change for education.
